Govt Declares Monday, August 17 Work Free Day

The Bauchi State Government has declared Monday, August 17, 2026, a work-free day to allow residents to participate in the state’s local government elections.

The decision affects civil servants, public sector workers and employees of banks and other institutions operating in the state.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado.

According to the statement, Governor Bala Mohammed approved the work-free day following the decision of the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC) to hold elections across the state’s 20 local government areas on Monday.

The government said the measure was introduced to give eligible voters enough time to cast their ballots without being constrained by work commitments.

Who Is Affected?

The directive covers workers at the local, state and federal levels who are based in Bauchi State.

Employees of banks and other public institutions operating within the state are also included in the declaration.

However, personnel involved in essential services are exempted and are expected to continue with their duties.

Government Urges Peaceful Participation

The state government appealed to residents to participate peacefully in the election and conduct themselves responsibly before, during and after voting.

It also urged voters to cooperate with security agencies and electoral officials to ensure that the exercise is conducted in an orderly manner.

The government further assured residents that relevant authorities would work together to provide a peaceful environment for the elections.

The Bauchi local government elections are scheduled to hold on Monday, August 17, 2026, across the state’s 20 local government areas.
