BREAKING: Former Kogi Governor Ibrahim Idris Dies At 77

Former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, has reportedly died in the United Kingdom at the age of 77.

Sources disclosed the development on Sunday, September 20, 2026, although details surrounding his reported death were still sketchy as of the time of filing this report.

Idris served as governor of Kogi State for two terms between 2003 and 2012 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He first became governor in May 2003 after defeating the then incumbent, Prince Abubakar Audu, in the governorship election.

Idris was re-elected in 2007, but the result was later nullified following a legal challenge over the exclusion of Audu from the election. The Court of Appeal upheld the decision in February 2008 and ordered a fresh election.

Idris subsequently contested the March 2008 re-run and was returned as governor. He remained in office until January 2012, when he handed over to his successor, Captain Idris Wada.

Born in 1949 in Idah, present-day Kogi State, Idris began his primary education in Onitsha, Anambra State, before completing it in Kano.

He later attended King’s Commercial College in Buguma, Rivers State, before proceeding to the University of Abuja.

Before entering politics, Idris was involved in business. He founded Ibro Trading Company, which had interests in areas including construction, furniture manufacturing and hospitality.

He also established a furniture factory in Sokoto and founded Ibro Hotel, which has been described in biographical accounts as one of the early three-star hotels in the former Sokoto State.

The former governor attracted national attention in 2006 when three of his daughters survived the ADC Airlines Flight 53 crash.

Following the crash, which claimed several lives, Idris described his daughters’ survival as a “superlative show of mercy” from God and called for thanksgiving.

Idris suffered another major family loss in April 2024 when his son, Mohammed Ibrahim Idris, a former member of the House of Representatives, died in Abuja shortly after observing Eid-el-Fitr prayers.

Mohammed represented the Ankpa, Olamaboro and Omala Federal Constituency of Kogi State in the House of Representatives.

As of the time of publication, further details concerning the circumstances of the former governor’s reported death were still being awaited.
