About 100 bags of human faeces have been discovered inside a compound at No. 16 Ibadan Street, Aba, Abia State.
The discovery was made on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, by officials of the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), Aba Zone, during an inspection of the premises.
According to ASEPA, the bags of human waste were stored within the compound of a public house, raising serious concerns over the possible spread of disease and the risk of an epidemic.
The environmental officials also found four basins containing human excreta in the corridor of the building.
Following the discovery, ASEPA sealed the premises to allow for a thorough investigation and to prevent further exposure to the potential health hazard.
In a statement issued by the agency, ASEPA described the situation as a serious public health concern.
“Even more disturbing, a sewage tank was discovered inside one of the downstairs rooms, directly beneath a bed where occupants sleep daily, despite being aware of the situation,” the statement said.
ASEPA added that the discovery went beyond an environmental violation, warning that the improper handling and storage of human waste could create conditions capable of triggering an epidemic.
“In a decisive move to prevent a possible outbreak and protect public health, the premises have been sealed today, 18th August 2026, pursuant to a court order, pending the necessary corrective measures,” the agency said.
It added that the building would remain sealed until the necessary requirements had been met.
The reason for storing the bags of human faeces at the premises has not been officially established.
However, some residents who reacted to ASEPA’s social media post alleged that the faeces were being sold to farmers as manure, reportedly at N10,000 per bag.
The claim has not been independently verified, and ASEPA has not confirmed that the waste was being sold for agricultural purposes.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the discovery and determine whether any environmental or public health regulations were breached.
