IBEDC Issues Fresh Warning To Customers

The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has dismissed reports claiming customers must carry out a compulsory prepaid meter update by purchasing electricity tokens within a specified period.

In a public advisory issued on July 21, 2026, the electricity distribution company described the information circulating online as unverified and urged customers to disregard it.

According to IBEDC, there is no mandatory prepaid meter update exercise, stressing that prepaid meters will not stop working simply because customers fail to buy electricity tokens within any particular timeframe.

The company, however, warned that customers who continue to consume electricity without purchasing tokens could be guilty of energy theft.

IBEDC explained that situations where electricity is used despite non-vending may amount to offences such as energy diversion, meter bypass or other forms of unauthorized electricity consumption.

It added that customers found culpable could face sanctions in line with existing regulations, including payment of loss of revenue charges, fines and possible prosecution.

The distribution company encouraged customers to continue purchasing electricity tokens based on their consumption and ensure that all electricity usage is done through authorised metering arrangements.

IBEDC also advised customers seeking clarification to contact the company through its official customer service channels rather than relying on information circulating on social media.
