Gabriel Jesus has completed his move from Arsenal to Barcelona, bringing his four-year spell with the Premier League champions to an end.
The 29-year-old Brazilian striker signed for Barcelona on Tuesday after completing his medical in Spain. The Spanish club confirmed the transfer on a deal that runs until 2029, with reports putting the fee at around €10 million
Jesus joined Arsenal from Manchester City in 2022 for £45 million and went on to make 123 appearances for the club, scoring 32 goals. He was part of the Arsenal squad that won the Premier League title last season.
However, his role at Arsenal had reduced considerably following a series of injury setbacks. He made only three Premier League starts last season, while Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres became more prominent options in the central attacking position.
The Brazil international had also attracted interest from Napoli before Barcelona emerged as his destination.
His exit had become increasingly likely before the transfer was completed. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had earlier confirmed that Jesus was not training with the first team.
Asked whether the forward’s absence was an indication that he was leaving the club, Arteta said: “Personal situations, whatever they are, I think it’s clear.”
Why Barcelona moved for Jesus
Barcelona had spent much of the transfer window exploring options for their attack, including an attempt to sign Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez.
Atletico, however, maintained their position against negotiating Alvarez’s transfer with their La Liga rivals, leaving Barcelona to consider other options.
Jesus now gives manager Hansi Flick another experienced attacking option as Barcelona strengthen their squad for the 2026/27 campaign. The Brazilian arrives after the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, according to reports.
The move also represents a fresh opportunity for Jesus to revive his career after a difficult period at Arsenal.
Jesus’ Arsenal record
Jesus arrived in North London with a strong reputation following a successful spell at Manchester City, where he won four Premier League titles.
At Arsenal, he initially became an important part of Arteta’s attack and was praised for his ability to play both as a centre-forward and from wider positions.
His progress was later disrupted by serious knee injuries, which restricted his availability and contributed to his reduced role.
He leaves Arsenal having scored 32 goals in 123 appearances.
Arsenal continue squad changes
Jesus is not the only player to leave Arsenal during the current transfer window.
The club have also confirmed the departure of midfielder Fabio Vieira, who has joined German side Hamburg.
Arsenal had also been exploring attacking reinforcements, with the club linked with Alvarez as they sought to reshape their forward options.
For Jesus, the Barcelona transfer provides a new chapter in his career and an opportunity to compete for regular playing time in one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
