Republic of Ireland players made their position clear before their UEFA Nations League encounter with Israel on Sunday, September 27, as they refused to exchange handshakes with their opponents and bowed their heads during the Israeli national anthem.
The Irish players also declined to exchange pennants with their Israeli counterparts before kick-off in Debrecen, Hungary, in a pre-match protest linked to the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict.
Ireland later completed a memorable outing with a 3-0 victory, scoring all three goals in the first half.
The unusual scenes before kick-off have since attracted widespread attention, with footage of the playersâ actions circulating on social media.

Ireland Players Bow Heads During Israeli Anthem
As the Israeli national anthem played at the Nagyerdei Stadion, the Irish players stood with their heads lowered and hands behind their backs.
There were no customary handshakes between the two teams, including between Ireland captain Dara OâShea and Israel captain Manor Solomon.
The Irish delegation also wore black armbands in remembrance of people who have lost their lives in the conflict.
The gestures followed growing calls within Ireland for the national team to boycott the two Nations League fixtures against Israel.
Ireland Manager Speaks On Protest
Speaking after the match, Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson said the playersâ actions had helped draw international attention to the conflict.
He told RTĂ that he hoped the protest would not need to continue in the next fixture, adding that the players had already raised awareness beyond Ireland.
The manager had earlier faced criticism over his description of the fixture, saying Ireland was playing against genocide. He subsequently acknowledged that his use of the word was wrong.
Gavin Bazunu Withdraws From Ireland Squad
The match was preceded by a lengthy discussion among members of the Irish squad after goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu expressed his opposition to participating in the fixtures.
Players held a meeting at their hotel in Debrecen on Saturday before a significant majority voted to proceed with the match.
Bazunu later withdrew from the squad, saying he believed it would be wrong for him to take part in the game and the return fixture scheduled for October 4 in BaÄka Topola, Serbia.
Hallgrimsson said his teammates respected the goalkeeperâs decision, although the timing made preparations difficult.
He said nobody questioned Bazunuâs position, but the team had limited time to respond to his withdrawal.
Ireland Seal 3-0 Victory Over Israel
Despite the tension surrounding the fixture, Ireland produced a strong performance on the pitch.
Troy Parrott opened the scoring in the 13th minute before Adam Idah doubled the advantage three minutes later.
Jack Moylan completed the first-half scoring in the 25th minute to give Ireland a 3-0 lead.
After scoring, Moylan removed his black armband and kissed it before kissing the Ireland team badge, a moment that also attracted attention.
FAI Had Called For Israelâs Suspension
The controversy surrounding the fixture dates back to February, when Ireland and Israel were drawn together in the UEFA Nations League.
The Football Association of Ireland had supported a motion calling on UEFA to suspend Israel from its competitions over the military campaign in Gaza.
More than 160 Irish athletes also signed an open letter urging the national team not to play the matches.
The FAI eventually decided to honour the fixtures, with concerns raised that a boycott could cause significant and lasting damage to the association.
Both matches are being played at neutral venues. Israelâs designated home fixture took place in Hungary, while Irelandâs return match is scheduled for BaÄka Topola, Serbia.
Israel Rejects Genocide Allegations
The conflict has drawn international scrutiny since Hamas-led militants attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, according to the BBC.
Israel subsequently launched a military offensive in Gaza, where the Hamas-run Health Ministry has reported more than 73,000 deaths.
Israel has repeatedly rejected allegations of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, maintaining that its military campaign is conducted in self-defence and in accordance with international law.
The Irish playersâ pre-match protest has added another chapter to the controversy surrounding the two Nations League fixtures, with attention now turning to the return encounter scheduled for October 4.
