Nigeria’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers are offering supporters something beyond the usual sight of established Super Eagles stars — a first proper look at some of the team’s newest additions.
The Super Eagles have been working in Uyo ahead of their opening qualifier against Madagascar, with head coach Eric Chelle using the training sessions to bring newcomers into a squad already packed with experienced internationals.
Isaac James, George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor are among the players attracting attention after receiving their first senior invitations.
For the trio, the international window represents an opportunity to move from promising performances at club level to competing for a place in Nigeria’s senior team.
James, who plays for Portuguese side Alverca FC, strengthens Chelle’s defensive options. Ilenikhena, an Al Ittihad striker, joins the attacking department, while LASK forward Usor offers another option going forward.
They are not the only players supporters may be keen to identify on the training ground. Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo and defender Chibuike Nwaiwu are also part of the emerging group seeking to establish themselves within the national team.
Their arrival creates additional competition in a squad containing familiar names such as Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, Calvin Bassey and Samuel Chukwueze.
Beyond preparing for Madagascar, the current camp gives Chelle valuable time to assess how the newer players respond to the demands of international football and how quickly they can adapt to his system.
Nigeria will begin their AFCON qualifying campaign against Madagascar in Uyo before turning attention to an away meeting with Guinea-Bissau.
For supporters still getting familiar with Chelle’s latest additions, the training footage provides a closer look at the players hoping to become the next familiar faces in a Super Eagles shirt.
