Chelsea and Manchester United headlined a dramatic Sunday in the Premier League, with both sides involved in seven-goal thrillers as Sunderland claimed their first win and Leeds fought back to hold Brentford.
Chelsea survive Brighton fightback
Chelsea maintained their perfect start to the campaign with a 4-3 victory over Brighton at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues appeared to be in control after building a two-goal advantage, but Brighton refused to fold and made the closing stages tense. Chelsea eventually held on to make it two wins from two.
The result keeps Xabi Alonso’s side among the early leaders, although the three goals conceded will give the manager plenty to consider.
Fernandes inspires United comeback
Manchester United produced another high-scoring contest at Old Trafford, recovering from an early deficit to beat Ipswich 5-2.
Leif Davis put the visitors ahead before Bruno Fernandes restored parity before the interval.
United moved through the gears after the break. Jacob Greaves turned the ball into his own net before Fernandes converted from the penalty spot to put the hosts in front.
Fernandes added another later in the half, while Bryan Mbeumo extended United’s advantage with an excellent lob.
Ipswich reduced the deficit through Chuba Akpom in added time, but United survived the late pressure to secure their first league victory.
Leeds respond after difficult opening half
Leeds had to dig deep to avoid defeat against Brentford at Elland Road.
The visitors dominated the first half and took the lead through Kevin Schade, leaving Leeds with little to show for their efforts before the break.
The home side improved considerably after half-time and began to put Brentford under sustained pressure. Their persistence was rewarded when Dominic Calvert-Lewin met Lukas Nmecha’s cross to score his first goal of the season.
Both sides had opportunities to win it late, but the points were shared.
Sunderland make their breakthrough
Sunderland secured their first Premier League win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Fulham.
Wilson Isidor, introduced from the bench, scored the decisive goal in the 75th minute after Habib Diarra created the opening with a quick run and low cross.
Fulham struggled to produce a response and failed to register a shot on target, leaving new manager Alvaro Arbeloa still searching for his first league points.
Sunday leaves early questions
The results provided contrasting fortunes across the Premier League on Sunday.
Chelsea continued their winning run, Manchester United recovered from their opening defeat, Leeds showed character to rescue a point and Sunderland got their campaign moving with three points.
For Fulham and Ipswich, however, Sunday’s results brought further work to do as both sides look for their first league points of the season.
