Nigeria’s political and security landscape dominates the headlines this Tuesday, with fresh developments surrounding the 2027 elections, opposition coalition efforts, military operations, kidnapping cases, alleged fraud and drug seizures across the country.
From plans by opposition parties to strengthen their alliance ahead of the 2027 presidential election to new arrests and security operations in different states, here are some of the major stories attracting attention across Nigeria today.
1. 2027: Opposition Parties to Hold Fresh Alliance Meeting August 18
Nigeria’s major opposition parties are expected to meet on August 18 as part of renewed efforts to build a stronger political alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The proposed meeting will take place a day before the scheduled commencement of campaigns for the January 16, 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections.
The discussions are expected to focus on how the opposition parties can resolve existing differences, strengthen their cooperation and possibly settle on a common presidential candidate and campaign strategy.
The August 18 meeting could become an important test of whether the opposition can present a united challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) before campaigns officially begin.
2. 2027 Election: EU to Send Electoral Experts to Nigeria
The European Union has announced plans to deploy an Electoral Expert Mission to Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The mission is expected to consist of between two and four independent experts who will monitor aspects of the country’s electoral process.
The EU made the clarification while dismissing reports suggesting that it had rejected an invitation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to observe the elections.
According to the bloc, the experts will undergo the necessary accreditation process with INEC before beginning their assignment.
3. Enugu Church Kidnap: Three Suspects Arrested
Security operatives in Enugu State have arrested three suspects allegedly linked to the abduction of worshippers at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, Inoyi-Affa, in the Udi Local Government Area.
The incident occurred on August 2 when gunmen reportedly attacked the church and abducted several worshippers.
The suspects were arrested during a security operation in which operatives reportedly recovered cash suspected to be part of a ransom payment, as well as arms and ammunition.
A confrontation reportedly occurred during the operation, with one of the suspects said to have been neutralised.
4. Alleged Coup Plot: Army Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji Gives Account in Court Documents
Army Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji, who is facing allegations linked to an alleged plot against President Bola Tinubu’s administration, has explained the reasons behind his actions in fresh court documents.
Ma’aji reportedly described his actions as being driven by patriotism and frustration over the condition of the country.
The documents provide additional details about the investigation into the alleged plot, including claims by investigators that military officers and civilians had discussed plans to overthrow the government.
According to the allegations contained in the case, the purported plan was suspended at one stage before later being revived.
The latest court filings have provided further insight into the allegations and the defence being offered by the accused officer.
5. Troops Ambush Suspected Lakurawa Fighters in Kebbi
Troops operating under Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have reportedly ambushed suspected members of the Lakurawa terrorist group in Kebbi State.
The operation followed intelligence indicating that the suspected terrorists were moving towards Dandi Local Government Area, allegedly with plans to carry out attacks.
The Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Olayinka Osoba, said troops responded to the intelligence by mobilising and setting up a tactical ambush.
The operation forms part of ongoing military efforts aimed at disrupting the activities of terrorists and bandits in the region.
6. Ondo Kidnap: Farmer Dies in Captivity as Five Victims Are Rescued
A farmer abducted in Okeigbo, Ondo State, has reportedly died while in the custody of his abductors.
The victim was among two farmers kidnapped by gunmen in the area.
The Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun Corps, announced the development while also confirming the rescue of five other kidnapping victims during separate operations across the state.
The reported death has raised fresh concerns over the safety of farmers and residents in rural communities in Ondo State.
7. Osun Governorship Election: Atiku, David Mark, Aregbesola Back ADC Candidate
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Chairman David Mark and the party’s National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, have campaigned for the party’s candidate in the forthcoming Osun State governorship election.
The trio urged voters to support Najeem Salaam ahead of Saturday’s election scheduled for August 15.
Atiku, while speaking to supporters, said the ADC had some of the best Nigerians within its ranks.
Aregbesola, a former governor of Osun State, also invoked the political legacy of the late Premier of the Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, saying the party would work towards reviving that legacy.
The ADC is seeking to make a strong impact in the governorship contest.
8. Ogun Police Arrest 23 Foreign Nationals Over Alleged Fraud
The Ogun State Police Command has arrested 23 foreign nationals over alleged involvement in a Ponzi scheme, visa fraud and other immigration-related offences.
The suspects were reportedly arrested last Tuesday by operatives attached to the Atan-Ota Division during a raid on a gated residential property within an estate around Iyana Iyesi, Onipanu-Ota.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the arrests in a statement.
The police said investigations into the alleged activities of the suspects are ongoing.
9. Ogun Police Arrest ‘Pastor Kenny’ Over Alleged N2.5m Pilgrimage Scam
Police in Ogun State have arrested a man identified as Kehinde Makinde, popularly known as Pastor Kenny, over an alleged N2.5 million fraud.
Makinde was accused of collecting money from 18 members of a fellowship in Saje, Adatan, on the promise of arranging a government-sponsored pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
According to the police allegation, the suspect promised the members N2 million each in connection with the arrangement.
Makinde was reportedly arrested in Ibadan, Oyo State, while police investigations into the case continue.
10. NDLEA, Army Seize 604.5kg of Suspected Cannabis in Edo
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), working with the Nigerian Army, has recovered 604.5 kilogrammes of suspected skunk cannabis during an operation in Edo State.
The seizure involved 65 bags of the suspected illicit drug recovered from a location described as a notorious drug hub in Ewe Luleha, Owan West Local Government Area.
The Edo State NDLEA Commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Monday.
According to him, the operation was conducted on August 5 as part of efforts to disrupt drug trafficking activities in the state.
