Breaking: FG Declares Tuesday Public Holiday for Eid ul Mawlid

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, the celebration commemorating the birth of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

The declaration was announced by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.

In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, the minister congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora as they prepare to observe the celebration.

Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the values associated with the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad, particularly compassion, humility and service to others.

“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” the minister said.

He added that the values should not be limited to the Muslim community, stressing that they are important to the country as a whole.

“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them.”

FG Calls for Peace and Unity

The minister also urged Nigerians to use the celebration as an opportunity to pray for peace, unity and stability across the country.

According to him, national unity remains a shared responsibility and requires the commitment of citizens regardless of their religious or ethnic backgrounds.

Tunji-Ojo further called on Nigerians to celebrate responsibly and show mutual respect throughout the holiday.

He wished the Muslim community a peaceful and joyful Eid ul Mawlid.

The minister also assured Nigerians that the Federal Government remained committed to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace across the country.

The public holiday will give workers and residents an opportunity to observe the religious celebration on Tuesday, August 25.
