A Nigerian woman has set the social media buzzing after breaking down in tears over an unfortunate situation involving an ajo (thrift) group she belonged to.
In a video making the rounds on social media, the woman is seen wiping tears and covering her face as she narrates how she lost access to a ₦300,000 contribution she had been saving towards.
According to her, she was a member of an ajo group where members contributed ₦300,000 and took turns receiving the lump sum.
Everything reportedly went smoothly until it was finally her turn to collect the money.
But just as she was expecting her payout, tragedy struck.
The administrator of the contribution group reportedly died.
“I do ajo sum of 300k. E reach my turn to pay. Admin die,” the woman said through tears.
She added: “I don’t even know maybe na the money or person wey die. E pain me o. I swear e pain me oo.”

Her emotional reaction has generated mixed reactions online, with some people joking about whether she was more devastated by the loss of the money or the death of the administrator.
Others, however, sympathised with her, noting that the situation was painful on both fronts.
Some social media users also shared similar experiences of contribution groups collapsing after an organiser died, disappeared or became unable to account for members’ money.
Ajo, also known as esusu in some parts of Nigeria, remains a popular informal savings system where members contribute regularly and receive the accumulated funds according to an agreed schedule.
While the system has helped many people access lump sums without relying on traditional banking facilities, the latest incident highlights the risks involved when the contributions are managed by a single individual.
It remains unclear how much the woman had contributed before the administrator’s death or whether the members will eventually recover their money at the time of this report.
