Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has expressed support for the recent engagement between the Catholic Bishops and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the clerics’ remarks as constructive guidance rather than criticism of the administration.
The former Abia State governor made the comments while reacting to public discussions that followed statements by Cardinal John Onaiyekan after a meeting between the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) and President Tinubu.
According to Kalu, the role of religious leaders is to offer honest counsel on issues affecting the country, irrespective of the government in power.
“The Catholic Bishops are the conscience of the country and once they give advice, their advice is not for or against anyone. Their advice is for any sitting president or leader to see things the way they should be,” he said.
Kalu Acknowledges Economic Challenges
The senator admitted that many Nigerians are experiencing economic hardship but argued that the country’s current challenges should be viewed within a broader context rather than being attributed solely to the present administration.
He said the government has recorded progress in managing key macroeconomic indicators but noted that the impact has yet to be fully reflected in the daily lives of many citizens.
“We have been able to capture the macro economy, but the micro economy is where we are having problems,” Kalu stated.
Calls for Constructive Engagement
Kalu described the meeting between the Catholic Bishops and the President as a normal and important part of democratic governance, saying faith leaders have a responsibility to present their observations on national issues.
He added that while political officeholders may sometimes present optimistic assessments to the President, religious leaders are expected to speak according to their convictions.
Kalu also clarified that Cardinal John Onaiyekan is not the President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, noting that there has been public misunderstanding about his role.
Urges Government to Consider Feedback
Commenting on the differing views expressed by some presidential aides and the bishops, Kalu said such exchanges should be seen as part of healthy public discourse.
He encouraged government officials to carefully consider the concerns raised by the bishops and use them to strengthen policy decisions and improve governance.
According to him, feedback from respected institutions can help leaders identify areas that require greater attention in addressing the country’s economic and social challenges.
