Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has raised questions about the educational information contained in the personal particulars submitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Melaye’s comments came after INEC published the personal particulars of candidates seeking elective offices, in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act. The publication allows members of the public to inspect the documents and, where necessary, challenge them through the appropriate legal channels.
Reacting in posts shared on his verified social media accounts, the former senator claimed that the documents did not contain details of President Tinubu’s primary and secondary school education, while indicating a university qualification.
In one of the posts, Melaye questioned the information contained in the documents and suggested that the educational history was incomplete.
In a separate post, he also queried the absence of what he described as key educational details, including dates of attendance and earlier academic records, while referencing the university qualification listed in the documents.
Mixed Reactions Follow Online Posts
Melaye’s remarks have set the social media buzzing, with users expressing differing opinions over the documents released by the electoral commission. While some supported his observations, others argued that the information submitted should be interpreted within the framework of Nigeria’s electoral laws and existing legal processes.
INEC Publishes Candidates’ Particulars
The Independent National Electoral Commission recently published the personal particulars of presidential, National Assembly and other candidates as required by law. The exercise is intended to promote transparency by allowing the public to examine documents submitted by candidates before the elections.
Under the Electoral Act, any individual or group with concerns about information contained in a candidate’s documents may seek legal redress through the appropriate courts.
As of the time of filing this report, President Bola Tinubu and the Presidency had not publicly responded to the concerns raised by Melaye regarding the published documents.
