President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), dismissing claims that the electoral body is under political influence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The President gave the assurance during a meeting with the leadership of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) at the State House in Abuja, where he reiterated his administration’s commitment to conducting free, fair and credible elections.
The delegation was led by the President of the CBCN, Most Rev. Matthew Ndagoso.
Responding to concerns raised by opposition figures over the neutrality of the electoral commission, Tinubu insisted that INEC has remained impartial in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President dismissed allegations that the commission was being influenced by his administration.
“INEC is neutral. They have never intimidated anyone. If political opponents are crying wolf, maybe they are afraid of their own shadows and uncertainty in the company they keep, not me,” President Tinubu stated.
The meeting also focused on Nigeria’s security situation, with the President outlining steps his administration is taking to tackle terrorism, banditry and kidnapping across the country.
Tinubu said the Federal Government has intensified intelligence gathering, strengthened security institutions and improved the welfare of security personnel as part of efforts to restore peace and protect lives.
He disclosed that his administration has also approved measures to strengthen the nation’s armed forces through increased manpower and improved military infrastructure.
Calling on religious leaders to support efforts to promote national unity and resilience, the President urged them to encourage hope among Nigerians through their messages.
“I have just approved the expansion of the armed forces. We are getting more equipment, building new barracks. We will defeat terrorism. It should be part of your sermons,” he added.
