A former Chairman of Kumbotso Local Government Area in Kano State, Abdullahi Gali Shitu, popularly known as Comrade Abdullahi Gali Basaf, has returned to his tailoring business after leaving office, saying vocational skills provide greater security than political positions.
Basaf, who completed his tenure as council chairman in March 2026, said he deliberately chose to resume his tailoring career despite holding both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Political Science and having access to professional opportunities through his political network.
He explained that his decision was driven by a desire to promote dignity in skilled trades and encourage economic self-reliance among young Nigerians.
According to him, tailoring has remained a dependable source of income throughout his political career and continues to offer stability beyond public office.
“Politics can change overnight. You can be in the office Today and out tomorrow. But tailoring remains. It feeds you, it supports your family, and it allows you to help others,” he said.
Basaf currently trains about 20 apprentices in his workshop and hopes to inspire more young people to embrace vocational careers instead of depending solely on politics or government appointments.
“My message is that they should not despise trades; they should value and modernise them,” he said.
“Value your trade more than politics, because it sustains you and enables you to support your political activities,” he advised.
The former local government chairman said his tailoring business previously helped finance his political campaigns and community-based organisations, reinforcing his belief that politicians should have independent means of livelihood.
“Tailoring is not a small trade. It is a major one. It sustains livelihoods. Even in politics, my tailoring business helped me financially to support my campaigns and organisations. Without it, it would have been impossible to sustain political activities,” he said.
Looking ahead, Basaf said he plans to transform his workshop into a large garment manufacturing company capable of creating significant employment opportunities.
“My goal is to modernise tailoring, establish a garment company, and employ fifty or more people. I want to contribute to the economy,” he explained.
He said his long-term ambition is to build a business that contributes meaningfully to local economic development and job creation.
“Tailoring is a noble profession, even greater than holding political office,” he said.
