Th Kebbi State Police command has confirmed that those responsible for the abduction of Justice Faruku Hassan Bunza, a judge of the Kebbi State High Court, are demanding ₦200 million to secure his freedom.
Speaking to journalists on Monday in Birnin Kebbi, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Umar Muhammad Hadejia, said investigators had established that the kidnappers had opened communication with the judge’s relatives.
He stated that intelligence reports available to the command showed the suspects also contacted a registrar attached to the High Court in Abuja as negotiations over the judge’s release continued.
Hadejia said law enforcement agencies had intensified the rescue operation by deploying tactical units, intelligence officers and other security personnel to forests and other areas suspected to be used by the kidnappers.
He explained that additional security measures, including strategic checkpoints and enhanced surveillance, had been introduced to restrict the movement of the abductors and improve the chances of rescuing the judge unharmed.
According to the police commissioner, the objective of the operation is to secure Justice Bunza’s safe return while ensuring every person linked to the kidnapping is arrested.
He expressed confidence that the coordinated efforts of security agencies would eventually lead to a successful outcome.
Hadejia called on members of the public to remain alert and promptly report any credible information that could assist investigators in locating the victim.
He reassured residents that the police command would not relent until the abducted judge is rescued and those responsible are brought before the law.
The commissioner further advised public office holders and other prominent citizens to avoid unnecessary travel after dark, noting that late-night journeys could leave road users vulnerable to attacks by armed criminals.
