The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has urged President Bola Tinubu to step aside ahead of the 2027 general election, saying the President no longer has the energy and capacity needed to address Nigeria’s growing economic and security challenges.
Obi made the remarks on Sunday during an appearance on Sunday Politics, a Channels Television programme anchored by Seun Okinbaloye.
The former Anambra State governor said Tinubu’s performance as President should not be judged by his record as governor of Lagos State, insisting that the country now requires a leader capable of confronting its current realities.
“The Bola Tinubu that was governor is not the one that is president today. He’s tired. He should be allowed to retire in peace, and then go home,” Obi said during the interview.
He argued that Nigeria was moving in the wrong direction and needed fresh leadership to reverse the country’s fortunes.
“As it is right now, Bola Tinubu is leading us nowhere. We will turn it so he can see it. That’s why maybe I’m calling for his retirement. The man should just step aside. Yes, he doesn’t have the capacity to do the job,” he added.
Obi also expressed concern over the country’s worsening economic situation, insecurity and rising poverty, saying millions of Nigerians were facing increasing hardship.
According to him, reports from international organisations have consistently highlighted the depth of Nigeria’s challenges, yet political discussions have continued to focus on personalities instead of finding solutions to the country’s problems.
He maintained that the priority should be tackling issues affecting the lives of ordinary Nigerians rather than engaging in political distractions.
