United States President Donald Trump has joined the debate over England’s tactics in their World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, questioning the decision to deploy captain Harry Kane in a deeper role.
Trump made the remarks during a speech on Friday night, where he praised the England striker but suggested that the Three Lions may have made a tactical mistake in the 2-1 loss to Lionel Messi’s side.
Referring to Kane, Trump said: “You have a great player in England, who I played golf with.”
He went on to describe the Bayern Munich forward as a fantastic player but questioned England’s approach during the match.
“Maybe they perhaps made a mistake when they made him a defensive player,” Trump said, before jokingly adding: “What do I know about soccer?”
Despite the disclaimer, the US president continued his assessment of England’s tactics.
“They took their best player, and they put him on defence — we gotta be a little offensive, right?” he added.

Trump is known to be an admirer of Kane and has previously spoken positively about the England captain, including comments he made earlier this month on his social media platform, Truth Social.
England were knocked out of the World Cup on Wednesday after suffering a dramatic 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals.
The Three Lions had taken the lead through Anthony Gordon before Argentina fought back late in the game, with Enzo Fernandez equalising and Lautaro Martinez scoring the winner in stoppage time after both goals were created by Lionel Messi.
The defeat has raised many unanswered questions among fans and pundits over Thomas Tuchel’s tactics, particularly the role played by Kane during the match.
