Erling Haaland scored the decisive goal as 10-man Manchester City claimed a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in a dramatic derby at Old Trafford.
City were forced to play for more than an hour with a man down after Phil Foden was shown a straight red card for violent conduct in the 23rd minute, but United failed to make their numerical advantage count.
Haaland eventually punished the hosts on the hour mark, finishing with his left foot after Josko Gvardiol created the opening. The goal was initially checked by VAR before being confirmed in the 63rd minute.
It was a frustrating afternoon for United, who created enough chances to take something from the contest but could not find a way past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Marcus Rashford came closest before the break when his free-kick beat the wall and Donnarumma but struck the post in the 45th minute.
United had another excellent opportunity shortly after half-time. Kobbie Mainoo tried his luck from distance in the 51st minute, only to see his effort come back off the post.
With City playing with 10 men, United continued to push forward and enjoyed more of the ball as the match progressed. Rashford had another effort blocked before Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo both failed to make promising opportunities count.
City remained dangerous despite their disadvantage and found their breakthrough after 60 minutes. Gvardiol helped create the chance for Haaland, who finished from close range to put the visitors ahead.
The goal survived a VAR review, leaving United needing to find a response against a City side increasingly focused on protecting their narrow advantage.
United made attacking changes as they searched for an equaliser, with Benjamin Sesko replacing Youri Tielemans before Joshua Zirkzee came on for Rashford in the closing stages.
City almost doubled their advantage in the 69th minute when Enzo Fernandez saw an effort hit the post after the goalkeeper had initially parried the ball.
United continued to press. Bruno Fernandes tested Donnarumma from outside the penalty area, while Mbeumo headed wide and Harry Maguire also failed to direct a late header on target.
Matheus Cunha saw another attempt blocked as City defended deep in the closing minutes.
United produced one final push in stoppage time, with Mbeumo directing a shot on target in the 95th minute, but Donnarumma made a crucial save to preserve City’s lead.
The hosts finished with 55% possession compared with City’s 45%, but their advantage in both possession and numbers did not produce the goal they needed.
For City, Haaland’s second-half finish proved enough to settle a tense Manchester derby in front of 74,161 spectators at Old Trafford, despite Foden’s early dismissal.
