Everton 2-2 Man United: Late Maitland-Niles Strike Denies United Victory

Manchester United were denied victory after Everton scored twice late on to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Mbeumo Gives United the Lead

Everton began the match with more possession and looked comfortable in the opening stages, but Manchester United soon grew into the contest.

Bruno Fernandes came close to opening the scoring in the eighth minute when his effort struck the crossbar. Everton also created opportunities, with Thierno Barry and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall among those who threatened the United defence.

Both sides struggled to find the final touch in the first half. Jordan Pickford and Senne Lammens were called into action, while the two defences made several important blocks.

The teams went into the break level at 0-0.

United returned from half-time with greater attacking intent and needed just one minute to break the deadlock.

Kobbie Mainoo supplied the pass for Bryan Mbeumo, who produced an excellent finish from outside the penalty area. The forward beat Pickford with his left foot to put United 1-0 ahead.

Everton Refuse to Give Up

The hosts responded by increasing the pressure on United.

Dewsbury-Hall tested Lammens with a shot from distance, while Everton continued to send crosses into the United penalty area. United defended with determination as the home side searched for an equaliser.

There were also several stoppages as the game became increasingly physical. Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot were booked for United, while Everton midfielder Merlin Roehl also went into the referee book.

United made attacking changes in an attempt to protect their advantage and find a second goal. Marcus Rashford and Matheus Cunha were replaced by Patrick Dorgu and Benjamin Sesko.

Everton also made changes, with Jack Grealish and Ainsley Maitland-Niles introduced during the closing stages.

Sesko Appears to Seal the Win

United looked to have finally ended Everton resistance in the 88th minute.

Luke Shaw delivered a dangerous cross into the box after Bruno Fernandes created the opening. Sesko rose above the defence and headed the ball past Pickford to make it 2-0.

At that point, United appeared to be heading for three points.

Everton, however, had other ideas.

Everton Produce Stunning Late Fightback

The hosts had already shown their determination when Tyrique George pulled a goal back in the 83rd minute.

Hackney created the opportunity before George finished with his right foot to reduce the deficit.

With United defending a narrow lead, Everton continued to push forward. The pressure eventually produced one of the most dramatic moments of the match.

In the sixth minute of added time, Maitland-Niles received the ball outside the penalty area and unleashed a right-footed shot.

The effort flew past Lammens and into the net, sending the home supporters into celebration and bringing Everton level at 2-2.

United Unable to Find a Winner

Manchester United tried to respond during the remaining moments, but Everton held firm.

Grealish saw an effort blocked by Maguire, while United also had to deal with several dangerous Everton attacks.

The referee eventually brought the match to an end after seven minutes of added time.

United had led in the closing stages and appeared set to leave with all three points, but Everton’s late response ensured the spoils were shared.

The 2-2 draw was a reflection of a match in which both teams created opportunities and produced an entertaining finish, with Maitland-Niles providing the final twist in a dramatic encounter.
