African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo has questioned the educational documents submitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Okonkwo raised the issue in a post on his verified X account after INEC published the personal particulars and credentials of presidential candidates, in line with the Electoral Act.
The former Labour Party presidential campaign spokesperson argued that the documents made available by the electoral commission did not include records of the President’s primary and secondary school education. He maintained that this raises legal questions about the educational requirements for elective office.
According to Okonkwo, Nigeria’s education system requires candidates seeking admission into a university to possess the necessary secondary school qualifications.
“Nigeria has its laws that should be respected. No Nigerian is qualified to go to a University without five credits at the O’ Level,” he wrote.
He further argued that President Tinubu should make available the relevant educational records, while also criticising what he described as inconsistent judicial interpretations of electoral laws.
In a separate post, Okonkwo expressed concern over the role of the judiciary in election-related disputes, alleging that some court decisions had gone beyond the intentions of existing laws.
He said judges should interpret legislation in line with the Constitution and the laws enacted by the legislature, rather than creating new legal standards through judicial pronouncements.
The comments come after INEC released the credentials and personal particulars of candidates contesting the 2027 general elections, a process that allows members of the public to examine the documents and, where necessary, challenge them through the courts as provided by law.
As of the time of filing this report, President Tinubu and the Presidency had not publicly responded to Okonkwo’s remarks.
The educational documents submitted by presidential candidates have continued to attract public attention, with supporters and critics expressing differing opinions on social media and other public platforms.
