Edo North Senator Adams Oshiomhole has expressed disagreement with Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu over the controversy surrounding comments on the use of deadly force against criminals.
According to the lawmaker, police officers should not hesitate to open fire on armed criminals, arguing that the Inspector-General should not appear to retreat from such a position.
The debate followed the Nigeria Police Force’s clarification that Disu never issued a “shoot-on-sight” order. The Force explained that his comments were made in reference to Force Order 237, which regulates the lawful use of firearms by officers during operations.
Police authorities also maintained that personnel had been fully briefed on the operational guidelines and understood the Rules of Engagement governing the use of weapons while carrying out their duties.
Reacting during an appearance on TVC News, Oshiomhole maintained that criminals carrying weapons should be confronted decisively.
He said, “That’s why when this IG was saying he didn’t say ‘shoot at sight,’ Why is he apologetic? Shoot at sight. If you see a criminal, shoot on sight.”
The former governor also commended the Department of State Services for filing an appeal against a court judgment that imposed life imprisonment instead of capital punishment on certain convicted offenders.
He argued that judicial officers should apply the law as enacted rather than rely on personal convictions.
He added, “I have said that judges should implement the law, not their personal sentiment. I’m also happy that the DSS is doing its job.
“They have appealed the judgment where people who should have been condemned to death were given life imprisonment.”
