The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has denied reports linking the institution to a viral video showing a lecturer allegedly caught in a compromising situation with a female student.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the university’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Aloysius Attah, the institution described the reports as false and misleading, insisting that the incident neither occurred on its campus nor involved any member of its staff or students.
The clarification followed widespread circulation of a video alleging that a lecturer identified as a staff member of the university attempted to engage in inappropriate conduct with a female student before fleeing through a window after students forced their way into the office.
According to the university, an internal verification was carried out after the video surfaced online.
“The attention of the management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has been drawn to a viral video and news reports circulating online about a lecturer erroneously identified as a staff of Nnamdi Azikiwe University reportedly caught in an inappropriate behaviour with a student within the university premises,” the statement read.
The management said its findings showed that the incident did not take place at UNIZIK and that the man featured in the video is not a staff member of the institution.
“We wish to categorically state that the report is not only false but misleading. After due verification, it has been established that the incident did not happen at Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
“The man in question seen in the viral video is also not a staff of Nnamdi Azikiwe University. For the records, no staff or student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University is connected in any way to the said incident.”
The university reiterated its commitment to maintaining high standards of professional conduct among its staff and a zero-tolerance policy against the exploitation or harassment of students.
It also frowned at the spread of what it described as false information capable of damaging the institution’s reputation.
“We will not be associated with false information that damages the reputation of our institution,” the statement added.
UNIZIK further blamed the rush to break news on social media for the spread of misinformation and urged media organisations, bloggers, content creators and members of the public to verify information before publication.
The institution also called on platforms that published the report to immediately retract and correct the false claims linking the incident to the university.
