Applicants can also monitor the progress of their requests through the platform and download completed affidavits after approval.

How to apply for an affidavit online

The first step is to create an account on the Federal High Court’s Electronic Court Management System portal.

New users are required to provide basic details such as their full name, telephone number, date of birth and email address before creating a password.

Applicants should enter their names correctly during registration because the information provided will be used for the affidavit.

Once registration is completed, users can sign in and proceed to the affidavit section of the platform.

Complete your affidavit profile

Before submitting an application, users must provide additional personal information to complete their profile.

The required details include residential address, native town, occupation, National Identification Number, state and country of origin, gender, religion and date of birth.

A passport photograph and valid identification document must also be uploaded.

Applicants are advised to carefully check the information provided before saving their profile to avoid errors that could affect their application.

Select the affidavit you need

After completing the profile, users can choose from the different affidavit services available on the platform.

For name-related matters, applicants can select options such as Change of Name, Correction of Name or Harmonisation of Names.

Those dealing with age or birth records can apply for a Statutory Declaration of Age, Declaration of Age for a Minor or Correction of Date of Birth.

The portal also covers affidavits relating to lost items, burglary, theft, robbery, property damage and missing persons.

Other available services deal with next of kin, guardianship, address verification, state of origin and good conduct.

For marriage-related matters, users can find options covering bachelorhood, spinsterhood, marriage declaration and non-impediment.

Banking-related applications include change of bank phone number, single account ownership and non-indebtedness.

There are also affidavits for sponsorship, transfer or claim of ownership, authorisation and proof of means, as well as applications connected to academic documents and institutional requirements.

Fill in the application

The information requested at this stage depends on the type of affidavit selected.

An applicant seeking to correct a date of birth, for example, may be asked to provide the incorrect date, the correct date and the reason for requesting the amendment.

Users must also supply their contact details and choose a preferred Federal High Court division from the available locations across the country and Abuja.

Upload supporting documents

Applicants are required to provide supporting documents before completing the process.

These include a recent passport photograph, a valid means of identification and a signature. The signature can either be uploaded or drawn through the platform.

Accepted identification documents include a National Identification Number, driver’s licence, international passport and voter’s card.

Applicants should also pay attention to the portal’s requirements for uploaded files. The application reviewed indicated a maximum file size of 300KB for the relevant uploads.

Check your details before submitting

The platform provides a preview page that allows applicants to inspect their information before final submission.

This stage is important because it shows the personal details, identification information, affidavit particulars, contact information and selected court division entered by the applicant.

Any mistake should be corrected before proceeding to payment.

Applicants must also accept the platform’s terms and consent to the processing of their personal information in line with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.

Make payment online

Once the application has been submitted, payment can be made electronically through the available payment channels, including Paystack and Remita.

One application reviewed on the platform displayed a charge of N1,797. However, applicants should rely on the amount shown for their specific service because charges may differ or be reviewed.

Users should carefully verify their applications before paying because the portal states that payments are final, non-refundable and non-transferable.

Download your completed affidavit

After the application has been processed and approved, the affidavit can be downloaded directly from the platform.

A copy is also sent to the email address supplied by the applicant.

Affidavits generated through the system carry unique reference numbers and barcodes, allowing their authenticity to be checked.

What applicants should know

Applications may sometimes be returned with a request for additional information or supporting documents.

Where this happens, applicants are expected to respond within 72 hours.

Failure to provide the requested information or complete the required payment within the specified period may lead to the application being automatically deleted. A fresh application and payment may then be required.

The platform also collects information including applicants’ NIN, photographs, signatures and contact details for processing, verification and other lawful purposes.

Users are warned against providing false information or altering an affidavit after it has been issued, as falsifying or misusing court documents may carry legal consequences.

With the electronic system, applicants can handle much of the affidavit process remotely, reducing the need to travel to a Federal High Court simply to begin or complete an application.
