The digital platform aims to curb bigamy, foster relationship transparency, and mitigate domestic disputes across the country.
The Ghanaian Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, in collaboration with family law agency MarryRight, has launched a digital platform named Marrify to enable individuals to verify the marital status of prospective partners prior to marriage.
The public database application was officially unveiled during a ceremony in Accra aimed at addressing hidden marital histories, bigamy, and legal conflicts arising from undisclosed prior unions.
Key Goals of the Marrify Initiative
Speaking at the launch event, Ghana’s Minister of Gender, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, highlighted that the application serves as a preventative tool to support informed personal decisions and safeguard family structures.
Minister Lartey outlined several core objectives driving the initiative:
- Informed Decision-Making:
Providing accessible records so individuals can confirm whether a partner is legally married, divorced, or single under civil or traditional frameworks.
- Reduction of Gender-Based Violence:
Preventing emotional distress, financial exploitation, and domestic conflicts that often arise when secret marriages are uncovered.
- Promoting Accountability:
Encouraging prospective couples to approach long-term commitments with mutual transparency and legal awareness.
“This platform will assist citizens in making better-informed choices before taking marriage vows,” Lartey stated. “By fostering relationships anchored on transparency and respect, we take a proactive step toward protecting vulnerable parties and reducing domestic friction.”
