Social Media Erupts As Governor Says His Akara Business Made ₦10m Monthly (Video)

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has stirred reactions online after revealing that his akara and bread business once brought him at least ₦10 million every month.

Eno shared the story while speaking about his business experience before becoming governor, explaining that he started by selling akara inside bread to workers going to their offices in the morning.

He called the product an “akara burger” and recalled how the business gradually attracted regular customers.

“We still have that shop there, and I started selling akara and bread. We were doing bread and akara burger. We opened the bread and put akara in it for you,” Eno recalled.

According to the governor, workers at ExxonMobil were among those who patronised the business, with many stopping by in the morning to buy akara and bread.

He said he later added a coffee shop to the business, giving customers something to take along with their breakfast.

“People going to work at ExxonMobil would buy it in the morning and take coffee. We started a coffee shop, and then they would take it every morning,” he said.

Eno said the business eventually became a major source of income for him, claiming that it made no less than ₦10 million monthly.

“That akara business and that bread used to give me not less than ten million naira, not less than that,” the governor stated.

The claim quickly became a subject of debate on social media, with many users questioning how an akara and bread business could generate such an amount every month.

Some users tried to calculate how many customers or pieces of akara would have been required to reach the figure, while others simply expressed disbelief.

The discussion has also revived the recent national conversation around akara following comments by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu about small businesses and entrepreneurship.

Daniel Regha (@DanielRegha) questioned why Eno would leave such a profitable business for politics.

“So he left his profitable akara and bread that was fetching him millions per month, to join politics that salary-wise pays less. How noble of him.

Akwa Ibom people are so blessed.”

Blessing Lami (@BlessingLa12420) was more critical of the claim.

“See as this old man stand dey lie to people with straight face. 10 million from akara and bread in one month? Person papa, who are you deceiving? These politicians think we were born yesterday?”

Anthony Adelaja (@tonitlc) focused on the mathematics behind the figure.

“This is even worse than gaslighting
You would have to sell 33,300 pieces of Akara DAILY to hit the N10M monthly projection

Even if each customer were to buy 20 Akara (daily), you would need to sell to 1,665 customers daily. Were you selling at a football stadium??”

SOLOMON TERESE (@solotizzy) also questioned the numbers.

“Let’s do the math. ₦10M a month is about ₦333,000 daily. If one Akara/bread combo is ₦1,000, he was selling to 333 people every single day? As a startup? The math is not mathing, Your Excellency.”

Chris Chyere (@CChyere) used the claim to criticise the country’s political leadership.

“Do you still wonder why the gross failures all over Nigeria? The people in leadership; so daft even their lies make a mad man to chuckle”

Nonz, God’s loved son (@nonso247), also expressed doubt about the governor’s account.

“I sincerely believe these people think we are all fools !!!! Do you know the quantity of Amara and bread that will make you N10m monthly ????? You will soon replicate it. What sort of joint did he have ? What sort of bread ? Why are ur kids not doing it now??? Fools everywhere”

Kelvin_Rico (@kloze_beatz_) offered a brief reaction based on his own experience.

“One akara seller for my street just tear this car last week”

Dr. Mujtaba Falalu (@MujX__) said the claim was difficult to believe.

“See, these people don’t rate you. The fact that anyone can stand and say this, thinking some people will actually believe it, is ridiculous and frankly, even frightening. Wow”

Another user, 🗿 (@b0ymanager), responded simply:

“God pvnish am”

Much of the criticism online has centred on the ₦10 million figure. However, Eno did not give a detailed breakdown of the business’s monthly sales, the number of customers it served, the price of its products or how much it spent on running the business.

It is therefore unclear from his remarks whether the ₦10 million referred to total monthly revenue or money left after expenses.

Despite the criticism, the governor’s story has drawn attention to the potential of small food businesses and the role they can play in building wealth.

For now, the biggest talking point remains his claim that a business built around akara and bread was once earning him at least ₦10 million a month.
