Why I Left Chelsea For Aston Villa — Garnacho Reveals

Argentina international Alejandro Garnacho has appeared to take a subtle dig at Chelsea after completing his move to Aston Villa, suggesting that playing in European competition was one of the key reasons behind his decision.

The winger recently joined Villa after ending a difficult spell at Chelsea, where he struggled to establish himself as a regular starter.

Garnacho’s career has taken an unexpected turn over the past 18 months. His relationship with former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim reportedly broke down, leading to his exit from Old Trafford after falling out of favour.

Chelsea later secured his signature in a deal worth around £40 million, but the move failed to revive his fortunes.

The 22-year-old managed just 14 Premier League starts last season, finding it difficult to cement a place under managers Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior.

Now set for a fresh start under Aston Villa boss Unai Emery, Garnacho said the opportunity to play in the UEFA Champions League played a major role in his decision to switch clubs.

“I think it’s also important to play in European competitions,” Garnacho said.

“I was looking for a club that would restore my confidence and help me return to the player I was during my early years at Manchester United.

“I spoke with Unai before I arrived here, and he instilled that confidence in me, the confidence to be here.”

The Argentine added that Villa’s participation in Europe’s elite club competition was another major attraction.

“I watched the Europa League victory last season, and playing in the Champions League is huge because it’s the highest level of football.

“We’re going to compete in it this season, and I’m really happy. I hope we can achieve something special,” he said.

Although Garnacho did not mention Chelsea directly, his comments have been widely interpreted as a subtle swipe at the Blues, who will not feature in European football this season.

Chelsea are reportedly seeking around £42.5 million for a permanent transfer after initially allowing the winger to join Aston Villa on loan.

Before his departure, the London club had informed Garnacho that he would not be guaranteed regular playing time, prompting both parties to agree on a move.

The winger has also attracted interest from clubs across the Premier League, Italy, other parts of Europe and Saudi Arabia.
