A prominent member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign from office rather than contest for a second term in the 2027 presidential election.
Okonkwo made the remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday while discussing the political climate ahead of the next general election and the recent legal developments involving the ADC.
The former Labour Party presidential campaign spokesperson alleged that recent political events, including the now-overturned Federal High Court judgment that initially deregistered the ADC, could discourage opposition parties from participating on an equal footing.
According to him, democratic institutions should ensure that all political parties have a fair opportunity to compete, allowing Nigerians to freely choose their preferred leaders during the 2027 elections.
Concerns Over Security
Speaking on the country’s security challenges, Okonkwo said insecurity remains one of the most pressing issues facing Nigerians.
He pointed to recurring reports of killings and kidnappings in states including Plateau, Benue and Oyo, arguing that greater efforts should be directed toward preventing attacks before they occur rather than responding after lives have been lost.
“When you want to talk about insecurity, you don’t need to refer to yesterday because it happens every day,” he said during the interview.
Personal Account
Okonkwo also shared a personal experience involving the mother of one of his employees, who he alleged was kidnapped in Kaduna State.
According to him, the kidnappers demanded a large ransom and reportedly injured the victim after the family was unable to meet their demands.
He said the incident reflects the experiences of many Nigerians affected by insecurity, adding that numerous cases are never widely reported.
Calls for Political Accountability
During the interview, Okonkwo maintained that the Tinubu administration should be held accountable for its handling of national security and governance.
He expressed the opinion that President Tinubu should voluntarily leave office instead of seeking another term in 2027.
“Tinubu should not even allow the election to hold. He should resign and go in peace,” Okonkwo said.
The Presidency has not issued any response to Okonkwo’s comments as of the time of filing this report.
