“Pay Back Or Go To Jail”: Police Warn Women Against Collecting Transport Fare Without Showing Up (VIDEO)

The Rivers State Police Command has issued a stern public warning regarding the growing social trend where individuals collect transportation money under the agreement of visiting someone, only to intentionally fail to fulfill the trip.

Speaking on behalf of the command in a viral video statement, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Rivers State, cautioned that such actions go beyond personal disputes and can constitute a punishable criminal offense under Nigerian law.

Legal Framework: Obtaining Money Under False Pretenses

According to SP Iringe-Koko, accepting funds with a predetermined intention not to honor the underlying agreement aligns with statutory provisions regarding Obtaining Money Under False Pretenses (fraudulent misrepresentation).

The police spokesperson noted that the practice has increasingly become a recurring complaint, with reports alleging that some individuals systematically solicit funds from multiple persons simultaneously under the guise of travel expenses.

“Where there is clear evidence that money was deliberately solicited and obtained through deception, the law views it as a criminal act rather than a simple breach of promise,” Iringe-Koko emphasized during her address.
