The global football community has been thrown into mourning following the death of Italian legend Franco Baresi, who passed away at the age of 66.
The development was confirmed on Friday by renowned football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano in a post shared on X.
Baresi, widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders in football history, dedicated his entire professional career to AC Milan, where he made over 700 appearances between 1977 and 1997.
His remarkable career at the club saw him win six Serie A titles, three European Cups, four Italian Super Cups, and two Intercontinental Cups.
Reacting to the news, Romano wrote, “Sad news from Italy as Franco Baresi has passed away this morning at 66 years old.“An absolute legend of the game with AC Milan and Italy, marking an era for different generations.“Thoughts and prayers with the family and friends.“Rest in peace, Franco.”
On the international stage, Baresi earned 81 caps for Italy and was part of the squad that clinched the 1982 FIFA World Cup. He later captained the national team to the final of the 1994 FIFA World Cup, where they finished runners-up after losing to Brazil on penalties.
