Presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has reacted to the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying the tournament once again proved that young people excel when they are given the opportunity to lead.
In a statement shared on Monday after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 to win the World Cup, Obi described the successful conclusion of the tournament as a celebration of excellence, competence and youthful leadership.
According to him, the emergence of the best team as champions was another reminder that merit and hard work always produce outstanding results.
Obi said the tournament also served as “yet another fitting birthday gift,” noting that it demonstrated that the younger generation has arrived and continues to prove its worth on the global stage.
“This is yet another fitting birthday gift, further demonstrating that the youth have not only arrived but are proving that excellence, when given the opportunity, will always prevail,” he stated.
The former Anambra State governor said the World Cup showcased competence, capacity, character and capability, stressing that these qualities become evident whenever young people are properly nurtured, empowered and entrusted with responsibility.
“Today, competence, capacity, character, and capability were on full display. It is a powerful reminder that when young people are properly nurtured, entrusted with responsibility, and given the opportunity to lead, they deliver outstanding results,” Obi said.
He urged Nigerians to embrace the same approach across every sector of national life, arguing that the country can only achieve meaningful progress by creating opportunities for capable young people to contribute.
Obi concluded by reiterating his vision for the country, saying, “A New Nigeria is Possible, and it must be reflected in every endeavour that brings pride, progress, and honour to our nation.”
