The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has announced that President Bola Tinubu has approved an increase in the retirement age for doctors and other healthcare professionals from 60 to 65 years.
Mannir Bature, NMA national publicity secretary, made this known in a statement on Wednesday, saying the approval will go through final process before it is fully implemented.
According to him, Muhammad Pate, coordinating minister of health and social welfare, will present the decision to the council on establishment via the office of the head of service to complete the process.
The announcement came shortly after a high level meeting between the minister and key players in the health sector including Bala Audu, NMA president.
Other attendees were representatives from Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) and Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU).
The meeting focused on the welfare of healthcare professionals across the country.
During the meeting, Pate said payment for arrears of Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) will start.
He assured stakeholders that the funds have been provided and payment will commence soon.
Pate said the process is at final stage and doctors and other healthcare workers will get relief soon.
He thanked stakeholders for their patience and cooperation and reassured the federal government’s commitment to the welfare of medical professionals.
With this new policy, government wants to retain experienced healthcare workers for longer period and stop brain drain and strengthen the healthcare system.
