Manchester United and Brazilian winger Antony is set to have a medical on Tuesday as his loan to Real Betis edges closer.
The Brazilian has struggled to make an impact and get game time since joining United in August 2022 for £82m from Ajax. He has yet to start a Premier League game this season and has only played 135 minutes of first team football.
Antony’s involvement increased slightly after Ruben Amorim became manager in November but not enough to cement his place in the squad.
According to AS report, the move is almost done and Antony will travel to Seville soon for his medical.
The loan deal includes numerous clauses to ensure Antony plays regularly at Betis.
The LaLiga club will pay a portion of Antony’s £200,000 a week wages – he will be one of the highest earners at the club during his loan. There is no option or obligation to make the deal permanent.
Antony’s time at United has been underwhelming. His first season showed promise with eight (8) goals and three (3) assists in 44 games.
He played a part in United’s successes that season – Carabao Cup winners, FA Cup finalists and 3rd in the Premier League. But that didn’t carry over.
Antony struggled in the 2023/24 season with three (3) goals and two (2) assists in 38 games.
This season has been just as bad with one (1) goal in 14 games.
United manager Ruben Amorim has mixed feelings about Antony’s exit.
When asked about the player’s future last week he said: “I want to keep my players; I’m focused on these players. I don’t know what will happen this window but he did a good job against Southampton.”
A new start for Antony? He’ll get to play and get his form and confidence back in a new place. For United another rebuild.
Will he find his rhythm in La Liga? Only time will tell but this is a big moment for the Brazilian winger.
