A lady known as Racquel has taken to her X (formerly Twitter) to call out her father over his wrong parenting style. In a real story post she shared how her dad didn’t do his job and put her in situations and roles that were unfair and emotionally draining.
Racquel said her dad taught her to take care of her siblings, basically put his parental responsibilities on her. She’s mad she was expected to take care of them like she wasn’t his child too.
She said her dad physically abused her when she refused to get married at 17. She said he wanted to use her bride price to fund her brothers’ education.
According to Racquel, her brothers got their misogynistic ways from their dad who perpetuated gender biased practices in the family.
Her words: “My dad isn’t a good dad. He taught me to take care of my siblings and still makes it my duty to provide for them. I’m the one refusing to do it, I was born like them. Also he literally beat me up for refusing to get married at 17 so he could use the bride price to train his sons.”
Racquel’s story is a wake up call to the societal issues of gender roles, financial pressure and toxic family dynamics that many Nigerian families face.
Parents should do their job not delegate it to their children. Equal treatment of sons and daughters promotes healthy family dynamics and respect.
Open communication and support can prevent children from feeling overwhelmed or resentful.
