Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag could be set to take over at Borussia Dortmund soon, according to reports from Germany. It all depends on how Dortmund get on in their Champions League tie against Bologna on Tuesday night.
Under Nuri Sahin, Dortmund have had a tough season so far. Last season’s Champions League finalists have struggled since Sahin took over in the summer.
Recent results have been poor, one win in their last five games before the winter break and three straight losses to start 2025.
Dortmund are currently 10th in the Bundesliga so their Champions League hopes are still alive.
The club play Bologna in their final group game this week. But if Sahin’s side lose to the Italian team who are winless in Europe this season, his job could be on the line according to Sky Sports Germany.
Erik ten Hag is reportedly a favourite to take over.
The Dutch coach has experience of German football, he managed Bayern Munich’s second team from 2013 to 2015.
Ten Hag, who is unemployed since leaving United in October, has been to several Dortmund games this season.
Dortmund are looking at short and long term options. His availability works in his favour but they may also look at Sebastian Hoeness, the current Stuttgart manager.
Hoeness impressed after leading Stuttgart to 2nd place last season and keeping them in the top 4 this season.
But getting Hoeness mid-season might be difficult as Stuttgart won’t let him go.
The 42-year-old has a release clause of €7-8m which can only be triggered in the summer. For now they might go for an interim manager if they decide to sack Sahin.
With Dortmund’s season hanging in the balance, the next few weeks will be crucial in determining the club’s direction both domestically and in Europe.
