CapCut Alternative: Meta Launches Edits for Creators
Meta is launching a new video editing app, Edits, to rival ByteDance’s CapCut which was recently removed from the App Store and Google Play Store due to the TikTok ban. This is a big move for Meta to be a player in the video editing space and offer creators an alternative to CapCut.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced on Threads that Edits will be launching on iOS next month and Android shortly after. Mosseri said, “It’s our job to provide the best possible tools for creators.”
Edits: A CapCut Alternative
Edits is designed for creators:
- Creative Suite: Edit pro-level videos on your phone.
- Inspiration Tab: A place to get ideas and see trends.
- Idea Tracker: A place to keep track of ideas.
- Collaboration Drafts: Share drafts with friends or collaborators.
- High-Quality Camera: Camera features for video creation.
- Instagram Insights: Creators can see how their videos perform on Instagram after posting.
Mosseri said Edits is for professional creators not casual users, to provide a full toolkit for content creation.
Meta’s History of Filling Gaps
Meta has a history of filling gaps in the market. When TikTok was banned in India in 2020, Meta launched Instagram Reels and took a big chunk of the short-form video space. When Meta launched Threads in 2023 they showed they can compete with X.
Edits fits into this strategy to fill the gap left by CapCut and to capture the video creators looking for an alternative. Even if CapCut comes back to the app stores, the uncertainty around it creates an opportunity for other tools like Edits to win.
Other Players in the Video Editing Space
Meta isn’t the only one. a16z backed Captions went freemium last month and is another CapCut alternative. But with Edits’ Instagram integration and creator focused features, Meta has a leg up.
