A Bayelsa State tragedy as Madam Stella drowned her 6-year-old daughter Rachael in a fit of anger.
The incident happened on Monday in Ukubie community, Southern Ijaw Local Goverent Area (LGA).
Eyewitnesses said the crisis started when Rachael disobeyed her mother’s repeated warnings to stay away from the river. Despite being warned several times, the little girl was found playing by the waterfront.
Her mother saw her and ordered her to leave but Rachael refused to listen.
Enraged, Stella allegedly threw her daughter into the river twice leading to her death (The Guardian Nigeria).
Her actions left the community in shock.
When confronted by concerned residents, Stella admitted to her actions and regretted the outcome.
“I regret my actions. I never knew it would happen this way,” she said, begging for forgiveness from the community.
Family members were devastated and still trying to come to terms with the loss.
A relative Jeph Nation said this was the third death in the family this year.
“All were painful but this one was so pathetic,” he lamented.
Videos of the incident have emerged online with Stella confessing in Ijaw language as she sat amongst a crowd of distraught people.
Another clip showed her sitting beside her daughter’s lifeless body in a boat as it was being taken away.
Many are still badly shaken.
This tragedy is a stark reminder of the devastating effects of unchecked anger and the need for emotional control and mental health awareness in communities.
