Reno Omokri has put to rest speculations surrounding Frank Mba, a deputy inspector-general of police (DIG), over the IGP tenure controversy.
In a post on X, Omokri said his findings showed Mba is fully committed to his current position and is very loyal to IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
He described claims that Mba is plotting to take over from the IGP as baseless.
IGP Egbetokun’s tenure has been a topic of discussion with questions on whether he should have retired September 2024 when he turned 60.
But Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi has clarified that Egbetokun’s stay in office is legal. He said the IGP’s appointment which started October 31, 2023 is for four years regardless of age.
Despite this clarification, social media is abuzz with claims that Mba an Igbo officer is involved in the tenure controversy.
Some say the whole debate is a clever ploy to position him as Egbetokun’s successor while others say the IGP’s tenure extension was designed to block an Igbo officer from becoming IGP.
Omokri: Mba Is Loyal, Not Ambitious
Reno weighed in and condemned the allegations on Mba saying it’s unfair and could harm his career.
He said the appointment of an IGP is the exclusive preserve of the president and can’t be influenced by online speculations or political sentiments.
He initially suspected Mba was behind the controversy. But after his own investigation, he said he was pleasantly surprised to find out Mba is not only loyal to Egbetokun but one of his greatest supporter.
According to Omokri, this loyalty is well-known in police circles and even close associates of the IGP attested to it.
Omokri also warned against social media campaigns that misquote Mba saying it will create unnecessary tension between him and the police hierarchy.
He advised Mba’s supporters to stop amplifying such narratives as it will only paint him in bad light.
Mba’s Career
Frank Mba, who was promoted to DIG in June 2023, is one of the highest ranking police officer from the South-East.
As his position makes him a potential candidate for higher office, Omokri said Mba is fully focused on his current job and not looking to disrupt the leadership structure.
As the tenure debate continues only time will tell how it will play out.
But Omokri’s intervention has shown the dangers of unfounded speculations especially when it involves those in law enforcement.
