Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that the upcoming governorship election in the state is conducted in a free, fair and peaceful manner.
Speaking while addressing supporters ahead of the August 15 governorship election, Adeleke said the integrity of the electoral process should be protected, urging all stakeholders to respect the will of the electorate.
The governor stated that Osun residents expect a transparent election and warned against any action that could undermine public confidence in the outcome.
“President Tinubu, I’m the Chief Security Officer of Osun State, and I’m passing this message to you. Osun will not accept any rigging,” Adeleke said.
He also referred to the political unrest that followed the 1983 governorship election in neighbouring Ondo State, urging political actors to avoid actions capable of creating tension before, during and after the poll.
Comments on Political Developments
During his address, Adeleke questioned why his administration was facing what he described as political pressure despite reports that the Accord Party had endorsed President Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election.
He also expressed concerns about security operations in the state, alleging that some police actions were being used to intimidate political opponents rather than focusing on addressing criminal activities.
The governor urged security agencies to prioritise efforts against kidnappers and other violent crimes, while ensuring professionalism and neutrality throughout the election period.
Recent Political Tensions
Adeleke’s remarks come days after the Secretary to the Osun State Government (SSG) was arrested and later released by the Nigeria Police Force, an incident that generated political reactions within the state.
As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency and the Nigeria Police Force had not publicly responded to the governor’s latest comments.
Background to the 1983 Ondo Election
The governor’s reference was to the 1983 governorship election in Ondo State, one of Nigeria’s most disputed elections during the Second Republic.
The election, which involved incumbent governor Michael Ajasin of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) and Akin Omoboriowo of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), was followed by widespread allegations of electoral irregularities and violent protests in parts of the state.
The outcome was later challenged in court, and the Supreme Court eventually upheld Ajasin’s election victory. However, the administration ended later that year following the military coup that brought the Second Republic to an end.
