Former Deputy Governor of Kebbi State, Alhaji Ibrahim Aliyu, has died after a prolonged illness, marking the end of the life of a respected public servant who spent decades serving the state in both the civil service and politics.
Family sources confirmed that Aliyu died in Sokoto. He served as deputy governor of Kebbi State between 2007 and 2015 under the administration of former Governor Saidu Usman Dakingari.
His death has drawn tributes from political leaders, with Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris describing the late statesman as a leader whose dedication, integrity and commitment to public service left a lasting impact on the state.
In a condolence message issued through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yahaya Sarki, the governor said Aliyu distinguished himself throughout his career, first as a civil servant and later as deputy governor, earning respect for his humility, honesty and devotion to the welfare of the people.
Governor Idris said the former deputy governor’s contributions to the growth of Kebbi State would continue to be remembered by future generations.
“His invaluable contributions to the development of our state and his unwavering commitment to the welfare of our people will continue to inspire generations,” the governor said.
The governor also prayed for Allah to forgive the deceased, grant him Aljannatul Firdaus and comfort his family, the Yauri Emirate and the people of Kebbi State as they mourn his passing.
Public Service Legacy
Aliyu was widely known as a quiet but influential figure in Kebbi politics. During his eight years in office, he worked alongside former Governor Saidu Usman Dakingari, supporting government programmes aimed at improving infrastructure, education and healthcare across the state.
Before becoming deputy governor, he also built a reputation as a dedicated career civil servant, a background many associates said shaped his disciplined approach to governance.
Recent Deaths of Former Nigerian Governors and Deputy Governors
Aliyu’s passing comes amid the recent deaths of several former Nigerian political office holders who served at the highest levels of state government.
On June 20, 2026, former Bauchi State Deputy Governor, Architect Audu Sule Katagum, died at the age of 69 after a brief illness. Katagum served as deputy governor between 2018 and 2019 under former Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar and was remembered for his contributions to public service and community development.
Earlier, Professor Sonni Gwanle Tyoden, former Deputy Governor of Plateau State and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, died on May 4, 2025, at the age of 74. He served as deputy governor from 2015 to 2023 under former Governor Simon Lalong and was widely respected for his contributions to education and governance.
Also, former Kwara State Governor and one-time Minister of Communications, Chief Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo, died in Abuja on June 25, 2025, at the age of 84. He was remembered for his distinguished career in academia, politics and public service.
With the death of Ibrahim Aliyu, Nigeria has once again lost one of its experienced political figures, whose years in public office were defined by service, humility and commitment to the development of his state.
